In addition to Malick's classes, we will have a girl urban kiz teacher on the first Sunday of April - 6th April. She is visiting from Scotland for one weekend only. She is the main organiser of the Aberdeen Afro Latin Festival and she will be sharing more about the festival at the training session. She brings with her a brilliant kizomba instructor as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Urban Kiz the same as Kizomba?

Urban Kiz is a modern evolution of Kizomba, retaining its foundational steps while introducing a distinct technique, frame, and connection. Originating in France in the early 2010s, Urban Kiz emerged as dancers began incorporating influences from hip hop, tango, ballroom, and Zouk, giving it a more structured and expressive style.

Unlike traditional Kizomba, which emphasizes grounded movements and close connection, Urban Kiz features sharper, more linear steps, controlled isolations, and an upright posture. The dance places a strong emphasis on musical interpretation, allowing for creative pauses, breaks, accelerations and intricate footwork.

Urban Kiz is highly versatile and is danced to a variety of music genres, including electronic music, R&B, pop, Afrobeat, and remixes. As the dance continues to evolve, new elements are constantly integrated, reflecting contemporary trends and expanding its expressive possibilities. This makes Urban Kiz a fresh and dynamic experience, distinct from its Kizomba roots while still honoring its origins.

What should I wear to an Urban Kiz Dance Class?

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement, such as leggings or sweatpants paired with a t-shirt or tank top.

If you want to wear special dance shoes, you absolutely can, but flat shoes are perfectly fine.

Are the Urban Kiz Workshops suitable for beginners?

Yes, our Urban Kiz Workshops are open to dancers of all levels, including beginners. Our instructors provide guidance and support to help you learn and improve. Previous experience in kizomba or any other dance is desirable but not essential. All you need is a positive attitude and an open mind.
